Kimya Dawson – Remember That I Love You

Posted by PacMusic on March 17, 2008

Oh so cute and oh so depressing.

How can music that sounds so delightful be about such horrible subjects. “My Mom” is about Dawson’s mother on her death bed, but as might be written by a small child, but sung in a rather happy way, as a nursery rhyme might be sung. This creates a really weird contrast of light and dark which really pushes the content of the lyrics in a way that is really sad.

“…and if you want to kill yourself, remember that I love you.”
alongside
“they think we’re disposable, well both my thumbs opposable are spelled out on a double word and triple letter score”.

The whole album has this thematic contrast. All of the songs are very simple and use a limited number of instruments, with simple rhyming patters and it is a very easy listen, but it succeeds in making you think, if you listen to the lyrics. This album will make you laugh, smile, frown and cry.
I’ve just seen that she is playing the UK in May and I’ll be definitely buying a ticket.

Listen to this album: While it’s raining outside.
